You might find other spells during your adventures. The spells that you add to your spellbook as you gain levels reflect the arcane research you conduct on your own, as well as intellectual breakthroughs you have had about the nature of the multiverse. Strixhaven launches in paper on April 23, 2021.Wizards are supreme magic-users, defined and united as a class by the spells they cast. I love the flavor, I love the new packaging, so far, I love everything about it! This is possibly the most excited I've been for a set so far. The house aesthetics are fantastic (and, much to my relief, very un-Hogwarts-y), the new simplified language works well, and there's a lot of extra value with the added Mystical Archive cards in every single booster pack. We're still a few weeks away from Strixhaven's full reveal, but wow, what a first look. Commanders and setlists haven't been announced yet, but expect them to be some of the higher-ups in each of the Colleges. In a really good change, Wizards has also announced that it is experimenting with new, more environmentally-friendly packaging for this set's Precon decks, with the only plastic being the wrapper around the cards. Each of the decks focuses on one of the colleges: Silverquill Statement, Prismari Performance, Witherblood Witchcraft, Lorehold Legacies, and Quantum Quandrix. Wizards of the Coastįinally, the Commander 2021 series will be based on, and launching alongside, Strixhaven. Will and Rowan Kenrith are front-and-center for Strixhaven. Add that to The List in Set Boosters, which is confirmed to be getting another revamp for Strixhaven, and that's a lot of historical cards alongside your shiny new ones! Think of it like Masterpieces, though Wizards of the Coast wants us all to be very clear that these are absolutely not Masterpieces.ĭespite some confusion when initially announced, Wizards has confirmed that Mystical Archive cards will be taking their own unique slot in booster packs (and at least three in Collector's boosters), meaning you will still get all the Strixhaven cards you need for Standard Constructed play, as well as a Mystical Archive card. That means powerful cards like Demonic Tutor and Swords to Plowshares can be printed with new art, and can be played in limited formats, but can't be played in Standard or Brawl unless it had a recent enough print before this. The interesting thing about these Archive cards is that, even though they will be included in every booster pack of Strixhaven, they won't be Standard-legal unless the most recent previous printing of them was in a Standard-legal set. Instead of being cards from the set, instead Strixhaven is introducing the "Mystical Archive", a selection of 63 cards from Magic's past that are being reprinted with gorgeous new art and frames. Wizards of the CoastĪlongside these, Wizards also announced that 'Strixhaven' is taking a slightly different approach to Showcase cards than recent sets. The Mystical Archive is a selection of reprints with gorgeous new art and frames.
